King Carlos III presided over the Memorial Sunday ceremony for the first time

King Charles III presided this Sunday, for the first time as head of state, the Remembrance Sunday ceremony, held on the second Sunday in November to remember British soldiers killed in service.

In the solemn ceremony, Carlos III, in the uniform of a field marshal, placed a crown of poppies with a message “in memory of glorious deaths”, according to the Efe news agency.

The two minutes of silence began with the chimes of Big Ben, the bell of the famous British parliament clock, which struck 11 times at 11:00 a.m. and resumed its normal service after five years of renovation work.

The ceremony was attended by other members of the royal family, including Queen Consort Camilla and Prince and Princess of Wales William and Kate, as well as British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Labor leader Keir Starmer.

In addition to Carlos, William, Sunak and Starmer, representatives of the armed forces laid poppy wreaths in the presence of thousands of ex-combatants in various armed conflicts in which the United Kingdom was involved.

Queen Elizabeth II, who died on September 8, considered Remembrance Sunday as one of the most important events in the royal calendar.

After the performance of the national anthem, around 10,000 ex-combatants paraded through the government zone as part of the ceremony.

The 40th anniversary of the Malvinhas/Falkland War, which pitted the United Kingdom and Argentina over the sovereignty of the South Atlantic islands, was also commemorated, with the presence of numerous ex-combatants.
