War in Ukraine: Zelensky’s popularity turns off after his altercation with Trump

After his exchange time with Donald Trump in the White House, Volodymyr Zelensky consolidated his resistance symbol condition.

The popularity of Volodymyr Zelensky, a symbol of resistance to Vladimir Putin, rises in Ukraine. In a month, the Ukrainian president won five popular points. His tense exchange with Donald Trump in the Oval office even made it more popular, even among the Ukrainians who did not vote for him in 2019.

“It is not for Trump that it is more popular, it is thanks to its principles as head of the nation,” said Natacha, a resident of Kyiv.

Resistance symbol

For many Ukrainians, Volodymyr Zelensky has become a symbol of resistance to Russia. No offense for Donald Trump, who had attacked the former humorist about his popularity and legitimacy, had described him as “dictator without elections” and estimated “that he is 4% of favorable opinions” in his country.

However, according to a survey conducted by The International Institute of Sociology of Kyiv (Kiis), 57% of Ukrainians interviewed during the first half of February say they “trust” their president. There were five points more than in December 2024 and the last survey, which remains below 90% of favorable opinions that add up in May 2022, at the beginning of the Russian invasion.

“I am not a fan, but I support it. When a teammate is pushed, the whole team defends it. We are nobody to judge it today, it is the story that will do it,” says Volodymyr, resident of the Ukrainian city of Dnipro, in the BFMTV microphone.
