Security, Defense, Energy … A Treaty of Friendship between France and Poland will be signed in Nancy

The French president and the Polish prime minister will be in place Stanilas in Nancy to sign a treaty aimed at strengthening the association between the two countries, with the war in Ukraine.

The French president, Emmanuel Macron, and the Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk will sign this Friday, May 9 in Nancy (Meurthe-Et-Poselle), a treaty of friendship between the two countries, a sign of growing weight in Poland Europe, key actor on the eastern flank against Russia on Friday, May 9 in Nancy.

The two leaders will meet at 12:45 pm in the city of Lorraine for a sequence loaded with symbols, between Europe’s day, which this year celebrates the 75th anniversary of European construction, and an imposing military parade in the Red Square for the 80th anniversary of victory over Nazi Germany.

Donald Tusk promises a treaty that “will change the situation”

With the context of the war in Ukraine, who, three years after the beginning of the Russian offensive, did not weaken despite Donald Trump’s promise to finish it. And a threat of American disconnection that pushes Europe to reissue greatly.

In this context, the reinforced friendship and cooperation treaty between France and Poland “will change the situation”, especially in terms of security and defense, promises Donald Tusk.

The two countries had already completed such a bilateral treaty in 1991, while Poland left the Soviet glacis, after the fall of the iron curtain, but less ambitious.

“The objective of this treaty is to consecrate the Franco-Poish friendship and strengthen the security, defense, infrastructure, energy and a complete series of other areas our bilateral association,” explains the French presidency.

“Very big European couple”

Emmanuel Macron intends to improve the relationship with Warsaw at the level of which he already acted with Germany, Italy or Spain through the treaties of Elysée (1963), El Quirinal (2021) and Barcelona (2023).

“Poland is our other very big European couple. There was no reason, it was even an anomaly, to consider that we had a privileged treaty with Germany (reinforced in Aix-La-Chapelle in 2019, note of the editor), that we had improved our relationship with Italy and with Spain, but not with it,” he underlies the Érlysée.

Temer the threat of the great Russian neighbor and the active support of Ukraine, Poland, a country of about 38 million inhabitants, has embarked on an accelerated modernization program of its army and has become an important political and military player in Europe.

Until now, very dependent on the United States for defense, it is deeply shocked by the climate of uncertainty generated by Donald Trump’s ambivalences to Europe.

France expects to strengthen military and diplomatic coordination in the region, and no longer allows the United States to dominate dialogue with the Poles.

It also puts itself in a new market for its defense industry when Warsaw seeks to acquire transport aircraft, rabones or submarines.

Donald Tusk promises a treaty that “will change the situation”

Warsaw is interested in the French idea of a European nuclear umbrella. A proposal considered “very promising” by Donald Tusk and that also attracts Berlin’s attention.

France is the only country in Western Europe, with the United Kingdom, endowed with nuclear weapons. The other members of NATO European countries are so far from the umbrella of US nuclear deterrence.

But in the face of transatlantic agitation, Emmanuel Macron said he was ready to “open the strategic debate on protection by our deterrent elements of our allies of the European continent.”

Nancy, a symbol city

Like its predecessors, he said on several occasions that the vital interests of France, at the base of his dissuasive doctrine, had a “European dimension”, which, therefore, could include neighboring countries, even beyond.

But he also pointed out that “whatever happens, the decision has always been and will remain in the hands of the President of the Republic.” Concerned about the symbols, Emmanuel Macron and Donald Tusk will sign this new treaty in a decoration full of history for the two countries, already linked to a secular friendship.

Nancy was the residence of the King of Poland Stanislas Leszczynski, who became Duke of Lorraine after being exiled from his country, and stepfather of the king of France Louis XV. The meeting of the two leaders will take place instead Stanislas, the architectural jewel of the city.

The firm will take place a week before the presidential elections in Poland, on May 18, for which the mayor of Warsaw, Rafal Trzawski, candidate of the Civic Coalition (KO) of Donald Tusk, has the favorite.
