The government of President Donald Trump will end decades of federal efforts to combat pollution that affects disadvantaged populations throughout the United States, said Wednesday, March 12, the head of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Lee Zeldin, to the head of the EPA, confirmed the decision to close the services responsible for the environmental justice missions within the agency, initially reported by the New York Times.
“The problem is that in the name of environmental justice, fortunes were sent to left -wing activist groups,” justified journalists, ensuring working in the advent of “a golden age” for “all Americans.”
These closures put an end to three decades of efforts to try to reduce pollution that affects the country’s disadvantaged populations.
An “odious decision”
The latter often resident near highways, power plants, factories or other polluting facilities, and they are more likely to develop heart disease or asthma.
“President Trump and his allies have no consideration for the well -being of people living in the United States and only care to protect the contaminator profits,” said Chitra Kumar, the Environmental NGO union of scientists concluded on Wednesday.
“This hateful decision will leave people who live, work and play near polluting industries (…) without real support,” he warned.
The new United States government had already finished an environmental justice plan established by former Democratic President Joe Biden, who aimed to assign 40% of federal investments in the energy transition to historically marginalized populations.
An area nicknamed the “cancer corridor”
And Lee Zeldin announced earlier this week to eliminate $ 1.7 billion of subsidies dedicated to initiatives in favor of environmental justice.
Last week, the new Ministry of Justice also announced the abandonment of the Prosecutor’s Office initiated by the EPA against a factory installed in Louisiana in an area nicknamed “Cancer Corridor”.
In this region rich in petrochemical industries, cancer rates among residents are among the highest in the country.
