Ukraine: Macron asked Xi Jinping to call Putin to “return to the negotiating table”

The French president asked his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping on Tuesday to interfere with Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin to convince him to return to the “negotiating table” in the Ukraine conflict, the Elysee said.

China, the world’s new referee? Shortly before the start of the G20, the President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron, asked his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, to mediate with Vladimir Putin after nine months of war in Ukraine.

“Emmanuel Macron” asks that China contribute to (…) sending messages to President Putin in order to avoid an escalation and return seriously to the negotiating table,” said the French presidency.

The Chinese president also “firmly” opposed the use of atomic weapons and “supported de-escalation and ceasefire,” the Elysee also reported.

Previously this Tuesday, the President of the Republic had asked Paris and Beijing to join their “forces” against the war in Ukraine.
