Mexico: The capital wants bullfights without killing or mistreating bulls

This announcement occurs a few days after the last bullfight of the season held in the sand of Mexico City. In total, only four of the 32 Mexican states for the moment prohibit Bull’s bullfights.

The city of Mexico City proposed on Thursday, March 13, prohibiting bullfights with killing or mistreating bulls, a measure destined to transform this controversial show into one of the most important metropolis of the tradition of bull corridors in Latin America.

The mayor of the capital, Clara Brugada, believes that her proposal will apply the constitutional reform approved by Parliament in December, which prohibited animal abuse and guarantees the protection of animals.

“The great Mexico City cannot maintain cruelty as a show, and less the extension of the suffering and death of an animal for entertainment,” Clara Brugada said by publicly presenting his proposal on Tuesday, which will be discussed in the Municipal Council.

“Bull Spectacle without violence”

The mayor’s intention is to prohibit “the death of the bull inside and outside the sand” so that once the show is finished, the animal returns to its reproduction.

The proposal would prohibit the use of sharp objects “that cause wounds or the death of the bull”, such as swords, spears or bandages (sticks with harpoons that the matador plant in the bull’s garro), authorizing only the layer and the crutch (red leaf), the elected said.

Taurus horns should also be protected to avoid hurting other animals or people. Each animal would see its time with bullfight limited to 10 minutes, for a maximum of half an hour in total.

The mayor would also create the legal notion of “bull show without violence”, whose objective is to preserve the economic activity and jobs surrounding bulls.

The Bullfighting Temple in the capital, the Monumental Plaza de Toros México, is the most imposing in the world with a capacity of 42,000 spectators.

Clara Brugada said that companies and promoters agreed “to go to a bull show without violence.”

Four Mexican states prohibit bullfights

This announcement occurs a few days after the last bullfight of the season held in Mexico City, where Spanish and Mexican killers participated. Legal disputes have lasted years among the promoters of bullfights and animal defenders.

“Culture, music, art and change of rights, evolve, transform. And the big cities have the obligation to transform at the same time,” said the mayor. Four of the 32 Mexican states prohibit the struggle of bulls.

Other Latin American countries have discussed this issue. In Bogotá (Colombia) and Quito (Ecuador), it is forbidden to kill the bulls. Venezuela has canceled certain bullfights, while in Peru the courts ruled against the prohibition.
