A joint G20 statement is expected to condemn the war in Ukraine

Most of the G20 members condemn the war in Ukraine and highlight the devastating global human and economic consequences, in a statement that should be approved at the group’s summit in Bali, according to the EFE news agency.

The text, to which the news agency had access, mentions the “war in Ukraine”, contrary to expectations, due to Moscow’s firm opposition to referring to the conflict that began against the neighboring country in this way.

Also according to EFE, the document highlights the “immense human suffering” and the problems that the war caused worldwide in terms of energy supply, food security or risks of financial instability, although it also reveals the different positions of the 20 countries. about the topic.

The joint statement admits that there were “other positions” on the situation in Ukraine during the Bali discussions, and acknowledges that the G20 is not the best event to resolve security issues like this.

The declaration, which still has to be approved by the G20 leaders, between the session on Tuesday and the one on Wednesday, is in line with what was announced by the representatives of the European Union and the United States, promoters of a firm condemnation of Moscow. on this summit. .

The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, stressed that the final text that the G20 delegations are still working on goes “in the right direction” to condemn the Russian invasion of Ukraine, despite the divergent positions among the members.

“The fact of having reached an agreement at the level of delegations is already a great achievement,” Michel said at a press conference, shortly before the start of the summit, “one of the most difficult that has happened,” he said.

No G20 ministerial meeting since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24 this year has managed to produce a consensus document due to differences between members when it comes to including allusions to the conflict and in what terms to do so.

Russia officially refers to the invasion of Ukraine as a “special military operation,” which makes it difficult to mention the word “war” in Ukraine in multilateral statements.

For this reason, some members of the G20 have put alternatives on the table, such as the case of the “armed conflict”, which most countries have rejected, says the EFE news agency, citing diplomatic sources.
