Two dead in Russia’s Belgorod region after Ukrainian attacks

Two people were killed on Tuesday in Ukrainian attacks on the Russian region of Belgorod, near the border with Ukraine, the region’s governor, Vyacheslav Gladkov, said on Telegram.

According to this official, the attacks were directed against the town of Chebekino. “There were two dead and three wounded,” Gladkov explained.

This announcement comes after Ukraine accused Russia of massive attacks against its territory, including the capital kyiv, which Ukrainian authorities say were directed against the country’s energy infrastructure.

Russia, which launched a military offensive in Ukraine at the end of February, denounces since mid-October a “considerable increase” in Ukrainian fire in various Russian border regions, including Belgorod, but also in Kursk and Briansk.

In October, Ukrainian forces shelled an oil facility near Belgorod and a power station in Belgorod, the regional capital, in the latter case causing a major power outage.

The military offensive launched on February 24 by Russia in Ukraine has already caused the flight of more than 13 million people -more than six million internally displaced persons and more than 7.8 million to European countries-, according to the most recent data. of the UN, which catalogs this refugee crisis as the worst in Europe since the Second World War (1939-1945).

The Russian invasion – justified by Russian President Vladimir Putin as the need to “denazify” and demilitarize Ukraine for Russia’s security – was condemned by the wider international community, which has responded by sending arms to Ukraine and imposing them on Russia in political and economic sanctions.

The UN presented as confirmed since the beginning of the war 6,557 dead civilians and 10,074 wounded, stressing that these figures are far below the real ones.
