Poland decided on Tuesday night to raise the alert level of certain military units, the government spokesman announced, while the media evoke Russian missile explosions on the territory of this NATO member country.
“It has just been decided to raise the alert level of certain combat units… and other uniformed personnel,” spokesman Piotr Müller said after an emergency meeting of a National Security Council.
Piotr Müller did not mention the missile information, but said there was an explosion in eastern Poland that killed two Polish citizens.
“Our services are currently on the ground to determine what happened,” he told the media.
An affected grain warehouse
Polish media reported that the explosion occurred at a grain warehouse in the town of Przewodow, near the border with Ukraine.
Polish President Andrzej Duda has held talks with US President Joe Biden and NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg as Polish officials say they plan to convene urgent Article 4 consultations with NATO leaders of the Pact. Article 4 of the NATO treaty stipulates that consultations can be organized when an Alliance member considers that its “territorial integrity, political independence or security” are threatened.
“We are checking the merits of using Article 4,” said Jacek Siewiera, head of Poland’s National Security Office. “We have very intensive contacts with our main allies,” he added.
On the other hand, according to his services, the Polish Defense Minister, Mariusz Blaszczak, should meet in the next few hours with his US counterpart, Lloyd Austin.
