An independent movement filed a complaint with the United States Federal Election Commission on Monday against former President Donald Trump (2017-2021), accusing him of “violating campaign finance laws” ahead of an eventual 2024 reelection.
The news comes a day before Trump’s promised announcement, which should be made from his Florida mansion, is rumored that he will clear doubts about a possible re-candidacy in the 2024 presidential election.
With this complaint the Campaign Legal Center movement wants federal election authorities to investigate the transfer of $20 million (about $19,500 million) between two Trump-affiliated organizations, believing that this money is intended to support the former president’s efforts to regain the White House to give to sponsor.
Allegedly, the money will have been transferred from Trump’s Political Action Committee (PAC), entitled Save America, to the organization MAGA Inc., registered as an Independent Political Structure (Super PAC) with the election authorities, although it is also linked to the former president .
The PAC coordinates a candidate’s campaign activities, but expenditures are regulated, while the Super PAC is a fundraising organization that can collect donations from individuals, corporations and unions, and spend unlimited amounts.
Under current regulations, federal candidates cannot raise more than $2,900 (about $2,800) from an individual donor or $5,000 (about $4,850) from a PAC in the primary or general election, in addition to prohibiting candidates from coordinating spending decisions with the Super PACs.
In the complaint, the Campaign Legal Center charged that the transfer of the former president’s main PAC to a Super PAC — with the intent to spend millions of dollars to influence the election, including Trump’s 2024 campaign — was a “flagrant attempt is about federal funding restrictions, which the organization sees as “critical” to preventing corruption.
