Germany offers to support Poland with air patrols

Germany offered this Wednesday to support Poland with air patrols, after the Polish territory was hit by a missile that caused two deaths.

“In response to the events in Poland, we will offer air patrols to the Poles with German ‘Eurofighters’,” German Defense Ministry spokesman Christian Thiels told a news conference in Berlin.

“It can happen as early as tomorrow (Thursday) if Poland wishes. There is no need to transfer the planes to Poland. Patrols can start from German airbases,” he added.

Christian Thiels stated that the country is already in contact with the Poles and that “the German Defense Minister will speak today with her Polish counterpart about this offer.”

Asked how many Eurofighters would be involved in these patrols, Thiels did not give an exact number, explaining that it depended on what Warsaw decided.

A missile, probably Russian-made but whose origin is still unknown, struck Polish territory, killing two people on Tuesday, drawing unanimous condemnation from Western leaders.

Russia has denied any responsibility for the incident.

If the missile is confirmed to have been fired by Russia, it would be the first strike against a NATO country since Moscow launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24.
