The United States Defense Minister promised, this Sunday, April 13, that the United States “will hit Iran strongly in case of failure of nuclear discussions, the day after the rare conversations between the two countries aimed at preventing Tehran to obtain nuclear weapons.
“If we cannot solve the problem in the negotiation table, there are other options to ensure that I will never get a nuclear bomb,” said Pete Hegseth in an interview with the CBS channel.
Before adding: “With what we face the hutis and in the region, we show our ability to attack and very strong (…). We do not want to get there, but if necessary, we will do it to prevent I will get the nuclear bomb.”
The two countries, which have not had diplomatic relations since 1980, exchanged on Saturday under the mediation of Oman’s sultanate. Pete Hegseth described the “very constructive” conversations, as Tehran. The discussions will continue next Saturday.
An international nuclear agreement broken in 2018
Western countries, United States in mind, have suspected that Tehran for decades wanted to have nuclear weapons. Iran, whose economy is strangled by sanctions, rejects these accusations and states that its nuclear activities are limited to civil purposes.
Washington had retired in 2018 from an international nuclear agreement with Iran, partly motivated by the absence of measures against its ballistic program, perceived as a threat to its Israeli ally.
But Donald Trump returned to contact in March, sending a letter to Tehran to resume nuclear negotiations, in order to replace the previous agreement that has become expired. At the same time, he threatened to bomb Iran in case of failure of diplomacy and took additional sanctions against the Iranian oil sector.
