Trump wants Harvard to “apologize” for “anti -Semitism” on his campus and threatens to withdraw his tax advantages

The US president accuses the university and other institutions to allow semitism to prosper on his campus. After having announced with Harvard $ 2.2 billion in subsidies, threatens the institution to withdraw an exemption from taxes.

Donald Trump threatened Tuesday to withdraw his important fiscal advantages of Harvard on Tuesday and even wants the institution to “apologize”, a new stage of its confrontation with campus after the prestigious American University to meet its requirements.

This new attack on the academic world and research is produced in the process of its government’s decision to withdraw $ 2.2 billion in federal subsidies of several years of the establishment of the very selective Ivy League, in the northeast of the United States.

“Perhaps Harvard should lose his tax exemption and be imposed as a political entity, if he continues to defend his” political ideological madness, “inspired by/supporting terrorism,” the US president added in his social network of truth on Tuesday.

The University rejects the requirements of the US President

The private university installed near Boston, with a large inheritance of more than $ 50 billion, benefits from an exemption from the Federal Tax Administration, as well as the state of Massachusetts.

Harvard’s presidency marked the spirits on Monday by publicly opposing the requests of the Trump administration, an end of non -reception praised on Tuesday on the oldest university campus in the country.

“Face is admirable,” says Gregory Johnson, for example, who teaches the Faculty of Medicine. “This is the minimum that Harvard could do,” he adds near the imposing red brick buildings.

“It’s great, I think more facs in the country should do the same,” said Darious Hanson, a student.

Harvard will not give up “your independence”

Harvard, like other American universities, was the scene of a student mobilization against the war fought by Israel in Gaza, a movement regularly denounced as an anti -Semitic by US conservatives, and has been attacked by the White House since the return to the power of Donald Trump.

The Republican accuses the university and these other institutions of letting the semitism prosper on their campus, and their government asked them to establish a complete series of measures, including an “audit” of the opinions of the students and the teaching staff, which fails, which the federal state would reduce the touch of subsidy.

Donald Trump “wants Harvard to apologize. And Harvard has to apologize for the flagrant anti -Semitism that occurred on his campus,” his spokesman said Karoline Leavitt on Tuesday.

In a letter addressed to students and teachers, the president of the University, Alan Garber, recalled on Monday that the institution had already initiated actions against anti -Semitism for more than a year and assured that Harvard would not abandon “their independence, or their rights guaranteed by the Constitution”, as the first amendment on freedom of expression.

“No government, whatever the ruling party, should dictate to private universities what they should teach, that can enlist and hire, or on what issues can conduct research,” he added.

An answer welcome by former President Barack Obama

This position caused the freezing of 2,200 million federal subsidies, with immediate effect: Sarah Fortune, a widely recognized researcher, received the order to stop his research on tuberculosis because of the federal structure that finances it, NIH, said Harvard Public Health School.

Harvard’s response firm was received by several figures from the Democratic Party, including Barack Obama, the former president welcomed an “example” and hoping that other “institutions” will follow this path.

Harvard is distinguished from Columbia, who agreed to initiate deep reforms, seen by some as a capitulation with the Trump administration. However, the University based in New York said Tuesday that it would reject “any agreement that makes us give us our independence.”

The Trump Administration offensive against universities has also been illustrated by the abolition of hundreds of visas from foreign students and arrests of pro-poustic student activists now threatened with expulsion, while residing in regular sites on US soil.

On Monday, one of its participants in the student mobilizations in Columbia, Mohsen Mahdawi, was arrested by immigration agents in an office where he had reached an interview for his American naturalization, in the state of Vermont.
