At least 18 people died and 16 were injured in the Egyptian city of Almançora, in the north of the country, on Saturday after a bus overturned in a Nile canal, local authorities said.
In a statement quoted by the Efe news agency, the safety director of the northern province of Dakahlia, of which Almançora is the capital, Marwan Habib, said the accident happened because the bus driver made a “wrong overtaking maneuver”.

Without giving further details about the accident, Marwan Habib noted that river rescue troops, ambulances and police had been mobilized. Rescued 16 people who were injured to varying degrees.
The injured have been taken to two provincial hospitals.as the search for more bodies continues.

The total number of passengers on the bus is not known and local media reports that children are among the victims.
Thousands of people die every year in road accidents in Egypt due to poor road conditions, excessive speed and non-compliance with traffic rules.
The Egyptian state statistics office counted 7,101 deaths in road accidents in 2021.
