Commercial fishing, as well as the extraction of resources, especially mining, were prohibited so far in this marine sanctuary, but traditional and leisure fishing continued to be allowed.

Donald Trump signed a decree on Thursday, April 17, aimed at re -authored commercial fishing in a vast sailor sanctuary located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and houses one of the most vulnerable ecosystems in the world.

This sanctuary, appointed National Monument of Marines of the Remote Islands of the Pacific, was created in 2009 by President George W. Bush and then widely extended in 2014 by Barack Obama.

Today it includes more than 1.2 million square kilometers of protected water, almost double the Texas area, around seven islands and atolls of the Pacific Ocean.

According to Donald Trump, this commercial prohibition of “disadvantage (AIT) honest commercial fishermen” pushing them “more out of the coast in international waters to compete with poorly regulated and highly subsidized foreign fleets.”

And “adequate commercial fishing would not endanger objects of scientific and historical interest” protected by the sanctuary, he says.

The maritime areas that make up the Sanctuary of Arrecifes de Coral Virgen, as well as many endangered species, including sea birds and certain sharks and whales, and are among the most immaculate and vulnerable marine environments on the planet, especially in front of climate change.

Trump openly climatoscepte

So many areas that will be, with this decree, now partly accessible to commercial fishing. The prohibition rises in large areas of the islands and atolls, “for ships that exceed the flag of the United States.”

Fishing permits can also be “delivered to the shipping ships of the foreign flag so that they can transport fish trapped by US fishermen,” is still detailed.

In this text, Donald Trump also orders his government to “amend or repeal all binding regulations that restrict commercial fishing” in the sanctuary.

From his return to the White House on January 20, the Republican, openly climatosceptic, has approached a series of environmental standards and has assumed a deregulation policy to promote the economy.
