Customs Zambia said on Saturday, April 19, after having arrested an Indian citizen who was trying to obtain more than two million dollars of cash and half a million dollars in gold by the Lusoka airport.
The 27 -year -old man went to Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, when he was seen by Customs officers at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport, the Drug Control Commission (Dec) said.
He was intercepted with $ 2.3 million in cash and gold for a value of $ 500,000, the commission said in a statement. The images transmitted by the local media show packages of tickets of one hundred dollars retained by elastic and wrapped in a bag placed in a suitcase.
“Transnational organized crime” suspicious
“The investigation continues, and the people involved in transnational organized crime will soon be trapped in the long arm of the law,” added the text.
Zambia has abundant reserves of minerals, including copper and gold, but 60% of its population lives below the poverty, according to the World Bank.
In 2023, five Egyptians were arrested in Zambia aboard a mysterious plane with weapons, 127 kilos of gold and $ 5.7 million in cash. They were released after Justice left the spy charges that initially weighed on them.
