A 40-year-old man, Darrell Brooks, who killed six people by charging into a crowd during a Christmas parade in the United States in 2021, was sentenced Wednesday to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
For their crimes, Judge Jennifer Dorow handed down the harshest sentence after two grueling days of hearings in a court in Waukesha, in the northern United States. “Frankly, you deserve it,” she justified.
“There are too many aggravating circumstances in this case to take into account,” he said, citing Darrell Brooks’ “disregard” for life and the rules, but also his “lack of remorse” or criminal record.
“Evil”
The day before, his victims had paraded to the bar to recount the trauma and suffering inflicted by what they called a “demon.” His relatives then spoke on his behalf. Referring to his son’s psychiatric problems, his mother considered that it would be more appropriate to commit him to a medical institution.
He himself said “I’m sorry” on Wednesday in a long rambling tirade, saying he had a hard time understanding the “why” of his actions.
But, as he had done many times during his trial, he interrupted the judge, refusing to be silent or sit down, and was escorted to an adjoining room for the end of the hearing.
“He may have mental problems, bipolar disorder or childhood trauma, but that is not the reason for his actions on November 21, 2021,” the magistrate commented.
