Europe is at risk of running out of gas in the winter of 2023-2024, the International Energy Agency (IEA) warned this Thursday, calling on governments to “act immediately” and cut demand.
About 30 billion cubic meters of gas could run out next year, with a total halt to supplies from Russia and also with China’s economic recovery, which will absorb a large share of liquefied natural gas (LNG), according to IEA calculations, created in 1974 by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) to advise countries on energy issues.
European reserves will only be at 65% at the start of the winter of 2023-2024, while they are currently at 95%, the agency’s director, Fatih Birol, told journalists during an “online” press conference.
The ‘cushion’ guaranteed by current reserve levels, the recent reduction in gas prices and mild temperatures, contrary to the usual, should not lead to overly optimistic conclusions about the future,” the IEA warns in this analysis, which underlines that by the summer of 2023, global geopolitical and economic conditions for obtaining supplies and replenishing reserves should have changed significantly compared to 2022.
