Republican elected officials in the US Congress wish to impose costs of “at least $ 1,000” in any person requesting asylum in the United States, according to a budget text made public on Monday, April 28 and aims to intensify the offensive of the Trump administration against immigration.
The text, of the Republican members of the Judicial Commission in the House of Representatives, is part of a set of proposals for the Federal State Budget that must still be adopted by the year 2025.
Donald Trump presses so that Congress quickly advances on this budget to finance some of its emblematic measures, such as its massive migrants expulsion program in an irregular situation.
An amount that could increase with inflation
The asylum application procedure, currently free, is intended for people who “have been persecuted or fear being persecuted by criteria of race, religion, nationality and/or belonging to a particular social group or a political opinion”, in the words of American immigration services (USCIS).
Unlike people requesting refugee status, asylum seekers must already be physically present at an entrance point in the United States (airport or border post in particular).
The amount of $ 1,000 for each asylum applicant can subsequently adjust to inflation, according to the proposal of these Republican elected officials.
This also provides rates of $ 8,500 for anyone who wishes to obtain the launch of the US authorities of an unaccompanied minor migrant.
Biden accused of having left migrants in an irregular situation
Tom Homan, manager of the Migrant Expulsion Program Searching for Donald Trump, decreed ABC News on Monday, according to him, the asylum application procedure.
“During the last decade, almost 9 out of 10 people who have requested the border with an expulsion order because they do not flee from fear and persecution in their homeland,” he said.
During a press point in the White House the same day, he did not hesitate to accuse, in barely veiled terms, the previous Democratic President Joe Biden had left migrants knowing in an irregular situation to remain in the US territory in the hope of obtaining electoral profits.
In an ABC News/Washington Post/Ipsos survey published on Sunday, a slight majority of people interviewed (53%) criticize the White House immigration policy, a percentage of 5 points since February.
