An American mother was killed by a shark Tuesday during a snorkeling trip off a cruise ship in the Bahamas, according to authorities.
The 58-year-old woman was attacked Tuesday afternoon while snorkeling with her family in the translucent waters off Green Cay, off the capital Nassau, Bahamas police say in a press release.
“Organizers of the outing and members of her family tried to rescue her but were unsuccessful” and the victim suffered “significant injuries to the left side of the body,” added law enforcement.
Once returned to earth, rescuers discovered that “she showed no signs of life,” according to police.
A precedent in 2019
The family, originally from Pennsylvania, had arrived in the Bahamas on Tuesday morning on the ship “The Harmony of the Seas”, operated by Royal Caribbean.
The passenger was on an “independent excursion” that had not been arranged by the cruise line when she was attacked, the company said in a statement Wednesday.
In confirming her death, Royal Caribbean added “providing support” to the victim’s relatives. In 2019, a young American man died after being attacked by three sharks during a family dive in the same area of the Bahamas.
