A Portuguese man was arrested along with seven other men during a meeting of neo-Nazis in Santa Catarina, in southern Brazil, and remained in custody on Tuesday, according to local press.
According to the G1 news portal, the eight men detained in São Pedro de Alcântara, a city located in the interior of the state of Santa Catarina, are part of an alleged neo-Nazi international group.
Prosecutor Luiz Fernando Pacheco, responsible for the case, told G1 that the investigations so far indicate that the arrested group defends fascist ideology and apology for Nazism.
The suspects were not identified by the authorities, but after being arrested in the event on Monday, they were placed in pretrial detention on Tuesday.
At the place of the arrests, the police found pamphlets, magazines and other objects that mention Nazism.
The suspects are between 22 and 48 years old and were arrested on suspicion of committing crimes of criminal association and racism.
One of them is a Portuguese citizen who has lived in Brazil for some years, according to G1, citing a source from the investigation.
Two men from the group would be involved in crimes of homicide. One of them wore an electronic bracelet on his leg after being convicted of attempted murder in 2005 following an attack on Jews in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul.
Another detainee was charged with double homicide stemming from a dispute between leaders of neo-Nazi cells in the Brazilian state of Paraná, in 2009, but has not yet been tried, according to information from Rádio Gaúcha and the Zero Hora portal.
