The vice president of the United States, JD Vance, called on Wednesday, May 7 to direct negotiations between Ukraine and Russia on Wednesday, May, the only way to put an end to the conflict, according to him.
“We believe that it is probably impossible for us to ensure complete mediation without at least some direct negotiations between the two parties. This is what we are focusing,” said JD Vance during a debate in Washington under the auspices of the Munich Security Conference.
“In particular, we would like Russians and Ukrainians to agree the basic guidelines to sit and talk to each other. Obviously, the United States is happy to participate in these conversations, but it is very important that Russians and Ukrainians begin to talk to each other,” said the vice president.
Washington threatens to retire from negotiations
“This is the next big step that we would like to take,” said JD Vance, saying “not too pessimistic” on this issue.
Washington maintained separate discussions with kyiv and Moscow at the end of the conflict, but threatened to withdraw from the process if the progress did not do quickly.
Donald Trump began an approach with the Kremlin since his entry to office in January and begs to quickly end the conflict three years after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
On February 28, the US president faced the cameras of President Volodymyr Zelensky in the White House, but Kyiv and Washington have signed a mineral agreement that gives the United States access to Ukrainian resources.
“We believe that Russians ask too much”
Kyiv expects this agreement to open the way for the security guarantees of the United States.
Speaking of Russian requirements for a high fire, the American vice president judged that they were excessive: “We believe they ask too much.”
On the occasion of the commemorations of the 80th anniversary of the victory over Nazi Germany, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on April 28 a unilateral truce of three days from May 8 to 10.
