Baysian sinking into Sicily: the superyatht was vulnerable to strong winds

The British government established, this Thursday, May 15, that the Bayesian of Yates that had sunk in August 2024 could not resist violent winds. In the sinking, Tech Mike Lynch had lost his life.

The Bayesian superyatido whose sinking in August 2024 was left seven dead, including British coach Mike Mike Lynch, was not designed to resist the winds that were blowing on drama day, according to a research report published this Thursday, May 15.

The 56-meter-long sailboat had sunk on the night of August 19, 2024 off the Coast of Porticello, after the sudden step of what was described as a mini-Tornado. Fifteen people had been saved but seven had perished, including four British.

He was the businessman Mike Lynch, 59, nicknamed the “Bill Gates British”, his daughter Hannah, 18, as well as Jonathan Bloomer, the 70 -year president of Morgan Stanley International, and his wife Judy Judy Bloomer, 71.

Many “vulnerabilities”

The first exams carried out “show that Bayesian could be vulnerable to strong winds,” concludes in an intermediate report made public on Thursday by Maib, the British organization responsible for investigations on serious incidents in the sea.

Maib could not examine the ship, whose remains are still 50 meters deep, but has reviewed its technical characteristics and climatic conditions the drama night.

The experiences about the stability of Bayesian showed that when he sailed to the engine and moved, since it was the case that night due to the degraded climatic conditions, he could not lean beyond an angle of 70 degrees, under a penalty of overturned. “Vulnerabilities” that were not aware of the crew and its owner, because they were not mentioned in the brochure of information related to the stability of the ship, says Maib.

“Once the yacht leaned beyond an angle of 70 °, the situation was unrecoverable,” said Andrew Moll, head of Maib.

According to weather readings, the wind blew more than 70 knots (130 km/hour), overthrowing the ship, which then took the water and sank. An analysis of the British Meteorology Office considered the formation of a particularly violent storm, since it had been able to generate maritime tornadoes, the report also points out.

Mike Lynch celebrated his release in June 2024 in a fraud trial in the United States that could have cost him years in prison.

An investigation into the death of the four British is underway in England. The rescue of the remains of the sailboats was suspended last week after the death of a diver. Operations must resume Thursday, said TMC Marine, the company responsible for this mission.
