Bill Gates invests 7,000 million dollars in health, gender equality and agriculture in Africa

Bill Gates announced, during a visit to Kenya, that his foundation will invest seven billion dollars in improving health, gender equality and agriculture in Africa.

The new commitment will be implemented over the next four years and builds on existing funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to strengthen health systems on the continent.

“African youth have the talent and the opportunity to accelerate progress and help solve the world’s most pressing problems,” Gates said.

The new funding comes as countries in East Africa and the Horn of Africa are dealing with their worst drought in decades.

“We will invest in local institutions and new collaborations that build the long-term resilience needed to make these crises less frequent and less devastating,” said Foundation Executive Director Mark Suzman.

During his visit, Gates visited primary health care centers, some of the world’s leading agricultural and medical research institutes, and smallholder farms.
