Mathematician, anti -corruption candidate, mayor of Bucharest … Who is Nicusor Dan, the new Romanian president?

He won the elections with 53.6% of the suffrage against the right -wing candidate George Simion. A victory that relieves the European Union and Ukraine. Who is Nicusor Dan, the new president of Romania?

He arrived far behind the favorite of the extreme right George Simion in the first round, the independent candidate Proeuropeo, Nicusor Dan, won the Romanian presidential elections with 53.6% of the votes. A particular victory thanks to an increase in exceptional mobilization between the two towers.

55 years and mayor of Bucharest, Nicusor Dan was a candidate against George Simion after the results of November 24, the elections finally canceled, giving the surprise candidate the winner of Georgescu Pro -ruso.

“Romania honest”

To deal with the extreme right, Nicusor Dan opted for a “anti-establishment” position, presenting himself as an independent candidate. Moderate and reformist, made corruption his favorite theme. He chose as slogan “Romania honest”, in a country where politicians are perceived as corrupt from the fall of communism.

Internationally, he reaffirmed Romania’s support to Ukraine and his European commitment. Therefore, his victory has something to reassure the EU. The evidence is the congratulations backed by European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron, the Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, as well as the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the secretary general of NATO, Mark Rutte.

The same relief on the side of Ukraine and Moldova, a country where George Simion is prohibited from entering after having made irredentist comments.

Conquest of Bucharest

Born on December 20, 1969 in Transylvania, Nicusor Dan made his policy in 1998 when founding the Youth Association for Social Action. In 2006, he created the Sauvez Bucharest Association (ABS) that he fought to preserve the inheritance of the Romanian capital against real estate speculation.

In 2012, he became a candidate for the City of Bucharest. Without any support from the political party, it occurs fourth with 8.48 % of the votes. In 2015, Nicușor Dan launched the Sauvez Bucharest Union (USB), with a view to the local elections of 2016 in the capital. Again he is not chosen mayor of the city.

Even in 2016, the USB extends nationwide under the name of Union Save Romania (USR). Nicușor Dan was elected deputy in the constituency of Bucharest during the legislative elections.

In the spring of 2017, he does not want his party to take a position on an inscription in the constitution of a heterosexual marriage definition. He resigned from the president of the party against the opposition of most of its members.

In May 2019, he announced his candidacy for the City of Bucharest, as Independiente. It is finally invested by the USR. In September 2020, he won the elections and became mayor of Bucharest.

A mathematics prodigy

Before politics, the new Romanian president is a brilliant mathematician. At 18 and 19, he won the Mathematics International Olympics. Then he moved to Paris in the 1990s for his studies at the École Normale Supérieure (Ease), before a doctorate in the sorbonne.

Back in Romania, he became one of the founders and the first administrative director of the École Normale Supérieure of Bucharest, created in the EES model within the framework of the Mathematics Institute of the Romanian Academy.

Elected president of Romania this Sunday, May 18, now he has the heavy task of gathering a divided country.
