The Civil Defense of the Gaza Strip informed, this Tuesday, May 20, the death of 44 people in new bombings in the small Palestinian territory in the war, where the Israeli army intensifies its military offensive.
“Civil Defense teams have transferred (to hospitals) at least 44 dead, mostly children and women, as well as dozens of injured, after new massacres committed by the occupation (…) in several areas of the Gaza Strip” from the 1st (midnight in Paris), said the AFP Mahmoud Blass, spokesman for the First Aid organization.
Mahmoud Bassal deduced 8 people killed in a shot after having attacked a school as a refuge for displaced in Gaza-Ville, 12 dead in a strike in a house in Deir El-Balah (center of the Gaza Strip), 15 dead in a bombing in a service station to the limit of the Palesty refugee field of Nousseira of Palesty Japalia (North).
Questioned by AFP about this information, the Israeli army has not provided immediate comments.
After reminding tens of thousands of reservists, Israel launched, last Saturday, an offensive extended throughout the Gaza Strip, to destroy Hamas and recover the hostages that retired the first day of the war, on October 7, 2023, during the unprecedented attack against the Palestinian Islamist movement.
“The fight is intense and we are progressing. We will take control of the entire territory,” said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday, after having authorized that a limited amount of humanitarian aid reaches the Gaza Strip after more than two and a half months of a complete blockade of the small Palestinian territory plagued by a catastrophic humanitarian situation.
“Two million hungry people”
Subject to the pressures of Washington and several European countries, Benjamin Netanyahu has invoked “diplomatic reasons” to justify this decision, criticized by its Minister of Internal Security, Itamar Ben Gvir, figure of the extreme right.
But the authorization to move on Monday to a very limited number of trucks that transport, among other things, baby food is far from eating the fears of the UN and many NGOs that have been warning for months against the risk of famine in Gaza.
“It is dust in the eyes, it is a way of saying” yes, we bring food, “but it is almost symbolic,” he denounced Claire Nicolet, of doctors without borders (MSF).
“Two million people are hungry” in Gaza, while “tons of food are blocked on the border,” said the World Health Organization (WHO).
Towards a high fire?
In a joint statement, French president Emmanuel Macron, and British prime ministers Keir Starmer and Canadian Mark Carney warned that they would not “not have their arms crossed” in the face of the “scandalous actions” of the Netanyahu government in Gaza.
The October 7 attack led to the death of 1,218 people on the Israeli side, mostly civilians, according to an AFP count of official data. Of the 251 people kidnapped that day, 57 are still in the Gaza Strip, 34 of which were declared dead by the Army.
The Israeli military retaliation campaign left at least 53,486 dead in Gaza, mainly civil, according to data from the Hamas Ministry, considered reliable by the UN.
