Italy hardens its naturalization rules by Blood Law for foreigners

Foreigners of Italian origin will have to demonstrate that they have a father or grandfather born Italian, in order to request obtaining Italian citizenship.

The Italian Parliament has ratified on Tuesday, May 20, a law transmitted by the Giorgia Meloni government, which restricts the conditions to obtain an Italian passport for foreign people, reports the BBC of the British media.

Until then, anyone who can prove their relationship with an Italian citizen who lived after 1861, the year of creation of the kingdom of Italy, could claim Italian naturalization.

From now on, only foreigners can demonstrate that an Italian father or grandparents can claim Italian naturalization.

Limit the number of naturalization applications

According to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani, this change aims to “avoid abuse or phenomena of the marketing of Italian passports.”

This new rule must also limit the number of people who can request naturalization and, therefore, “improve the efficiency of consular services, to the extent that they can devote themselves exclusively to those who really need it, due to their specific link with Italy,” said Italian minister.

When the Giorgia Meloni government presented the law to the Italian Parliament at the end of March, more than 60,000 citizenship verification procedures were being carried out. In 10 years, the number of Italian citizens living abroad to Bondi by 40%, from 4.6 to 6.4 million, according to the Italian government.
