“A large part of the daily crime fraud, even criminal networks, are cash fraud.” Listened to this Thursday, May 22 by the Senate Research Commission on Financial Crime, Gérald Darmanin begged “the end of liquid money” to combat drug trafficking.
“This will not prevent drugs, drug deliveries,” he admitted, “but once money is traceable as sometimes cryptoactive, it is more complicated for the consumer as the dealership to escape a financing circuit.”
The French remain attached to cash
Would the French be ready to give up the cash as recommended Gérald Darmanin? Obviously not. It is true that they are less and less attached to it: according to a survey conducted by the banker of France, the card leads to the preferred means of payment (62%) before the species (14%). And for the first time in 2024, the French paid more with their card than with tickets and pieces.
However, 60% of respondents consider that it is important or even very important to be able to pay in cash. The French believe that species are a guarantor of anonymity (40%), allow immediate settlement (37%) and better expense management (31%).
Nononymous guarantor and allowing an immediate agreement, it is precisely, according to the Minister of Justice, which allows illegal activities to prosper.
