War in Ukraine: kyiv’s allies increase restrictions on the reach of weapons, the wrath of the Kremlin

The new German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced Monday that Berlin and several allies of Ukraine no longer establish limits in the reach of the weapons provided in kyiv.

New support for Ukraine. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said Monday, May 26 that the main Western allies of Ukraine, of which Germany no longer set restrictions on the scope of the weapons provided in kyiv, without specifically saying what this meant for future deliveries.

“There are no more scope limits for weapons that were delivered to Ukraine. Neither by the British nor by the French, nor for us. Neither for the Americans,” said Friedrich Merz, during an interview about WDR public television in Berlin.

“This means that Ukraine can now defend himself, for example, attacking military positions in Russia (…), which he did not do some time ago, with some exceptions. He can do it now,” said the German conservative leader, who assumed the position at the beginning of the month.

Germany more discreet in their deliveries

However, the new head of the German government did not specify whether or not his words would have an impact on the weapons delivered in the future by Berlin to Ukraine, in particular with respect to the long -term taurus missiles.

This announcement of the German leader was described “quite dangerous” by the Kremlin.

“If these decisions have really taken place, they go against our aspirations to enter a political regulation,” said Dmitri Peskov, spokesman for the Russian presidency, in a video transmitted by the Russian media.

“And so it is a fairly dangerous decision,” he continued.

Under the previous government of the Social Democrat Olaf Scholz, Germany, the second provider of military aid in Ukraine, refused to provide these Taurus missiles, fearing an escalation of tensions with Russia.

Before his entry at the beginning of May as Chancellor, Friedrich Merz said it was favorable to the delivery of these missiles within more than 500 km, which allowed the Russian territory to reach in depth.

But since then, he has been more ambiguous, emphasizing that he would no longer detail the weapons he would send to Ukraine, for strategic reasons, not to inform Moscow. Until now, Germany has not delivered to the weapons of Ukraine more than 70 kilometers.

European allies will still do “everything in (their) power to continue supporting Ukraine militarily,” said Friedrich Merz, while Ukraine underwent an attack that involves the record number of 355 drones on the night from Sunday to Monday, after a weekend of mass attacks.
