Iran: Protesters set fire to the former home of Ayatollah Khomeini, founder of the Islamic regime

Protests linked to the death of Mahsa Amini continue to grow in the Islamic Republic of Iran.

A new Iranian symbol has been attacked. Protesters started a fire in front of the house of Ayatollah Khomeini – founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran – in Khomein, his hometown, can be seen in a video posted on social media on Thursday and authenticated by AFP.

The place had been transformed into a museum in honor of the architect of the Iranian revolution that created the Islamic Republic in 1979.

Protests and repression intensify

This symbolic act is part of the protest movement against the death of Mahsa Amini, which has entered its third month. The 22-year-old Kurdish woman had been arrested three days before her death for violating the strict dress code that requires women to wear the Islamic headscarf in public. The circumstances of her death during police questioning remain unclear.

Since the beginning of the demonstrations, the authorities have denounced “riots” and have detained hundreds of people while several deaths are to be regretted.

The court also imposed the death sentence on Wednesday on three people accused of their involvement in the protests, the Mizan Online Judicial Authority agency reported, bringing the number of death sentences since Sunday to five.
