A UN Humanitarian Office spokesman (Ocha) said Friday, May 30 that “Gaza is the most hungry place in the world”, where “100% of the population is threatened with famine.”
“It is the only demarcated area, a country or a territory defined within a country, where the entire population is threatened with the famine. 100% of the population is threatened with the famine,” said Jens Laerke, during the UN regular press point in Geneva, refuting the statement otherwise by the Israeli authorities.
The spokesman explained in detail the difficulties found by the UN to transport humanitarian aid in the Palestinian territory. Israel only lets this help in the fall, after a total blockade, several weeks, established in the resumption of its military offensive.
“One of the most hindered humanitarian aid operations”
According to the spokesman, 900 humanitarian aid trucks have been authorized by Israel since the partial lifting of the blockade, but for the moment only 600 trucks can be accessed. Even a lower number could be sent to the territory, due to bombings and insecurity in particular.
This limited number of trucks “is a distribution of food for drops, in an operational shackles, which makes it one of the most hindered humanitarian aid operations, not only today in the world, but also in recent history,” said the spokesman.
