A truce far from being still activated. While the humanitarian situation remains critical in Gaza, the United States has submitted Israel and Hamas a proposal of a high fire to suspend hostilities within the Palestinian territory.
• Negotiations in the middle of a humanitarian crisis in Gaza
Negotiations on a high fire aim to end almost 20 months of devastating war. The Hebrew State intensified its offensive in Gaza on May 17 to take control of this Palestinian territory, destroy Hamas and free the last hostages, eliminated during the unprecedented attack on October 7, 2023 that caused the war.
This attack led to the death of 1,218 people on the Israeli side, mostly civilians, according to a counting from the French press agency established from official data. Of the 251 people kidnapped by Hamas that day, 57 are still retained in the Gaza Strip, of which at least 34 died, according to Israeli authorities.
More than 54,249 Palestinians, mainly civil, were killed in Israeli military retaliations, according to data from the Ministry of Health of the Hamas Government for Gaza, considered reliable by the UN.
The humanitarian situation in Gaza is still disastrous even if it helps it finally begins to enter the territory after a blockade of more than two months imposed by Israel. A UN Humanitarian Office spokesman (Ocha), Jens Laerke, said in Geneva on Friday that Gaza was “the most hungry place in the world”, where “100% of the population is threatened with famine.”
• 60 days of truce and exchanges of hostages and prisoners
According to two sources close to the negotiations, the new American proposal is related to a 60 -day truce that can be extended to 70, and the delivery of Hamas of five living hostages and nine dead in exchange for the release of the Palestinian prisoners during the first week, and a second exchange in the same number of living hostages and dead during the second week.
Of the 251 people kidnapped by Hamas on October 7, 2023, 57 are still held in the Gaza Strip, of which at least 34 died, according to Israeli authorities.
• Washington says that Israel has “approved” its proposal
Although so far there has been an official reaction of Israel, the span of the White House Karoline Leavitt announced Thursday night that the US proposal had been approved by the Hebrew State.
“I can confirm that the emissary (Steve) Witkoff and the president submitted to Hamas a proposal of high fire that Israel approved and supported,” he said, adding that “Israel signed this proposal before it is sent to Hamas”, and that “the discussions continue.”
According to Israeli media, including Israel’s times, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told the families arrested in Gaza that he had accepted the agreement.
• Hamas issues reservations
Reacting to this proposal, Hamas indicated that he did not respond to his requests, to the extent that “it means, in essence, the perpetuation of the occupation, the continuation of the murders and the famine,” said Bassem Naïm, one of the leaders of Hamas on Thursday night.
This proposal “does not respond to any of our people’s requests, particularly at the end of war and famine,” he added, emphasizing that the movement examined the answer to give them.
Statements that have not failed to react to the Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, who called Friday to use “all necessary force” against Hamas.
After Hamas once again rejected the proposal of agreement, there are no more excuses (…). We have already lost too many opportunities. It is time to go with all the necessary strength, without blinking, destroying and killing Hamas “in the Gaza Strip, he wrote on his telegram channel.
