While Israel faces a growing international pressure, the United States again prevented the UN Security Council on Wednesday, June 4 to demand fire and humanitarian access to Gaza.
This text, “unacceptable for what he says and unacceptable for what he does not say”, “would undermine diplomatic efforts to achieve a high fire that reflects reality in the field and would encourage Hamas,” he justified the American ambassador to the UN interim brita, just before the vote.
In silence in this archive for a year, the Council has been fighting to speak with one voice since the beginning of the war between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas, blocked several times by US vetoes, but also Russians and Chinese.
In this context, he has not tried to leave silence since November, when the United States of Joe Biden had blocked a text that also demanded a high fire.
Fourteen voices for a voice against
The draft resolution, subject to the vote of the ten non -permanent members of the Council, raised 14 votes and one against. According to the text consulted by AFP, he demanded “a high immediate, unconditional and permanent fire” and the unconventional liberation of hostages.
Emphasizing the “catastrophic humanitarian situation” in the Palestinian territory, demanded the “immediate and unconditional lifting of all restrictions in the entrance to humanitarian aid to Gaza and its safe and unwound distribution on a large scale”, even by the UN.
After more than two and a half months of blocking, Israel has again authorized since May 19, the entrance to Gaza of a limited amount of UN trucks, which speaks of a “drop of water” in the ocean of needs in the territory devastated for 20 months of war.
At the same time, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), an organization for opaque financing supported by Israel and the United States, has established aid distribution centers reported by the UN as contrary to humanitarian principles.
“We will all be judged by history”
While several dramas have taken place in recent days near these centers, killing dozens, the United Nations described them as “fatal traps” where the hungry Palestinians are forced to walk “between spike wire”, surrounded by private armed guards.
“We will all be judged by the story about what we have done to stop this crime against the Palestinian people,” the Palestinian ambassador to the UN Riyad Mansour, asking the Council to act on Tuesday.
Israeli ambassador to the UN Danny Danon punishes the draft text. “This resolution does not advance humanitarian assistance. Socava. Ignore a system that works to promote a political objective,” he must declare to the Council, according to the comments released by his services. “She ignores the only part that always endangers Gaza’s civilians: Hamas.”
Israel faced a growing international pressure to end the war that devastates Gaza, triggered by the unprecedented attack against the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas on October 7, 2023 in the Israeli soil.
The last resolution of the Security Council dates back to June 2024: was the support of a Plan of Alto the American fire in several phases accompanied by hostage releases, high the fire that had not materialized before January 2025.
