On the way to Gaza aboard a humanitarian ship with the Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, the Franco-Palestinian Eurodiputa Rima Hassan said Thursday that the boat had deviated from her itinerary to help four “refugees from Sudan” in the sea.
“Four people threw themselves into the sea at the time of the intervention of the Libyan Coast Guard, we were able to rescue them, they are with us in our boat,” wrote the Euro MEP on social networks, supporting photos and videos, while explaining that they were “refugees from Sudan.”
Rima Hassan has been on board, since Sunday, a sailboat of the flotilla coalition for Liberty, who left Sicily in the direction of Gaza to provide humanitarian aid.
Several dozen people gathered in a boat
But on Thursday morning, the “Chang (É) boat” after a “call of anguish”, explained the Eurodiputa. The sailboat was in the Mediterranean Sea, south of Greece and northern Libya and Egypt.
In the images published by the elected official and other passengers of the ship, we can see several dozen people grouped in a small boat in the open sea.
Some of them were in the water, floating with tires, when a larger boat, that of the Libyan Coast Guard, according to the crew, intervened near the boat.
The “flow” and some “jumped into the water,” said another crew member on Instagram, Brazilian activist Thiago Avila. “Now we call the guards of the Greek coast to come and assume the responsibility of putting them safe,” he added.
Four refugees rescued “healthy and sound”
These people “derived without an engine for two days, after five days in the sea,” said Rima Hassan in a press release, transmitted by his movement La France Insumise.
He estimated his number in the boat in “almost 40” and said that the four rescued refugees were “healthy and healthy.”
The European deputy announced in his account X that the Frontex agents, the European Border Agency and the Coast Guard, had recovered the four rescued refugees.
“This dramatic incident once again highlights the urgency of a European political response that respects international law and the refugee convention,” added Rima Hassan.
