The end of the 13th day. This Friday, June 6, the Arkansas State Police announced the end of Grant Hardin’s hunt, sentenced to 50 years in prison to Calico Rock, for murder and rape.
On Sunday, May 25, the former 56 -year -old Local Police Chief and nicknamed the “Devil of the Ozarks”, had escaped by passing a member of the prison staff.
According to local authorities, Grant Hardin was found by Arkansas police forces and the American border patrol near Moccasin Creek, in Izard county, a few kilometers from the prison, of which he escaped thirteen days before.
These are tracker dogs that detected a smell in the research area, which leads to the capture of the fugitive shortly after.
“Thanks to the excellent work of the local, state and federal police forces, the inhabitants of Arkansas can promote a sigh of relief and I can confirm that Hardin’s violent criminal is again in detention,” Governor Sarah Sanders said.
A hunt in the mountains
Grant Hardin had been arrested in Calico Rock prison since 2017 for a 50 -year prison sentence. The one who declared himself guilty for the murder of Firearms of James Appleton, 59, an employee of the city’s waters, was also convicted of the violation of a primary school teacher, dating from 1997.
In 2023, a documentary entitled the “Devil of the Ozarks” was published.
As The Guardian explains, the investigation of the fugitive, dressed in an improvised outfit similar to that of the guards of his prison at the time of his escape, led to the deployment of hunting dogs, horse officers, drones, but also helicopters. The Ozark mountain region is known for its rocky and steep landscapes, its dense forests and its large network of caves.
A few days before the capture, the authorities announced that they thought the fugitive had abandoned the State. Finally, an elite team of the highly qualified American border patrol had joined the investigation.
