Nine months after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, at least 437 Ukrainian children have been killed on the fringes of fighting, according to a count by the country’s attorney general reported by the Reuters news agency on Saturday.
More than 800 children were also injured, say the authorities, which however specify that the estimates are still ongoing: controls continue in certain liberated areas, in combat areas but also in places still controlled by Russian forces.
Donetsk, the most affected region
It is more precisely in the Donetsk region that the number of victims among Ukrainian children is the highest: 423 of them died or were wounded because of the war, again according to the office of the general prosecutor.
In total, according to the United Nations, more than 16,000 civilians have lost their lives since the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24. Russia, for its part, denies deliberately targeting these people.
