It is a colorful, crossed-out train with many victorious inscriptions that left Kyiv to arrive in Kherson this Saturday, the first since the start of the Russian invasion on February 24.
A week after the liberation of the city of Kherson, the train left to the chants of the passengers, including soldiers in particular, the Reuters press agency reported on Saturday.
In the crowd, Hryhorii Vyrtosa, 67. This construction worker rejoices: he is about to find his son, from whom he was separated eight months ago, at the start of the war.
“I feel happiness, immense happiness. I will shout to the whole world: ‘Glory to Ukraine!'” he declares with a smile on his lips.
Meeting on the platform of the Kherson station
This is the first time since April that Hryhorii Vyrtosa has been able to see his home region again. Upon his arrival, after hugging his son, the worker expressed his emotion to Reuters.
“I can’t even put my feelings into words,” she says.
Like him, dozens of passengers find their loved ones with tears in their eyes after getting off the train. Last week, the city of Kherson was liberated by Ukrainian forces, after almost 9 months of Russian control. The Russian occupation, however, left its mark: according to Ukrainian investigators, a “Russian torture chamber” was discovered in the city, for example.
