War in Ukraine: the Russian Army announces to attack the Dnipropetrovsk region, the first in addition to three years of conflict

The entry of the Russian army into the Dnipropetrovsk region marks a new symbolic setback for Ukrainian forces, in difficulties in the front, after more than three years of war.

The Russian army announced this Sunday, June 8, carrying out an offensive in the Ukrainian region of Dnipropetrovsk, which borders Donetsk’s, the first in addition to three years of conflict.

“The units of the 90 armored division (…) have reached the western border of the People’s Republic of Donetsk and continue to lead the offensive in the territory of the Dnipropetrovsk region,” the Russian army on Telegram announced.

Moscow has also announced the capture of a new small town in the Donetsk region, Zarya.

New reverse for Ukraine

The entry of the Russian army into the Dnipropetrovsk region marks a new symbolic setback for Ukrainian forces, in difficulties due to the lack of men and armaments.

Beyond the symbolic aspect, this advance of Moscow’s troops could also have a strategic value in the field, in full diplomatic discussions promoted by Washington for an agreement of the conflict.

Before the Russian offensive in February 2022, about three million people lived in the Dnipropetrovsk region, including approximately one million in the regional capital, Dnipro, which is regularly the objective of mortal drones and missile strikes.

An expected exchange of prisoners

A Russian bombing in a city in the Dnipropetrovsk region, in the center of eastern Ukraine, left at least one dead, the Ukrainian regional government announced on Sunday, June 8.

Russia “hit the town of Mejivska, in the Synelnykivskyi district with a guided bomb. A man was killed,” the head of the Regional Council of Dnipropetrovsk, Mykola Loukachouk on Telegram.

He also reported combined attacks in the Nikople area not far from there, evoking “drones, artillery and multiple launcher systems.” The electricity lines and four private houses in the city have been damaged, he reported.

These assaults come when Moscow and kyiv accuse each other of interrupting an exchange of prisoners that will take place this weekend, the only concrete result of direct conversations held at the beginning of the week, more than three years after the launch of the Russian invasion in February 2022.
