A first place since 1992: why Trump’s decision to deploy the National Guard in California is controversial

For the second consecutive day in Los Angeles, the clashes opposed the protesters, facing the massive evictions of illegal migrants as part of the policy launched by Donald Trump, and federal immigration police officers. In response, the US president ordered the deployment of the National Guard on Saturday.

It all started on Friday, June 6, with the arrest of dozens of people by Federal ICE agents, the American Immigration Police in Los Angeles. The protesters gathered in the center of the city and the clashes have broken, opponents of the activists, in the face of the massive expulsions of illegal migrants as part of the policy launched by Donald Trump, to the ice agents.

The clashes continued this Saturday, June 7 for the second consecutive day, lighting the Los Angeles districts, such as Paramount, a suburb of the Californian city, or even Compton.

Ice members had gathered in the morning near a department store in Diy Depot, where workers traditionally come to offer their services for the day. The protesters began to regroup on the scene and the Sheriff’s office said they had deployed agents at the end of the morning while driving the tensions.

The protesters have thrown objects into the police and tried to prevent a coach from leaving the facilities. The agents postponed them with tearful tear gas and grenades.

The governor of California denounces a “deliberately incendiary” decision

In response, Donald Trump “signed a presidential memorandum that provides the deployment of 2,000 national guards to remedy the anarchy that we have left prosperous,” according to the expression of the White House spokesman, Karoline Leavitt, who rejected the failure of the “unable” California democrats.

Therefore, the US president decided to deploy some 2,000 members of the National Guard in California. “If the governor of California, Gavin Newscum (nickname given by Trump to Gavin Newsom,” scum “which means” garbage “in American jargon, the editor’s note), and the mayor of Los Angeles, Karen Bass, cannot do their job, what everyone knows, then the federal government will intervene and solve the problem,” he had warned in his social network.

When deploying the National Guard, Donald Trump approved the opinion of the Democratic Governor of California, who denounced a “deliberately incendiary decision (which) will only increase tensions.”

“We are in close coordination with the city and the county, and there is currently no unsatisfied need,” he said.

Karen Bass has punished a “completely useless” act. “Our city has already experienced large -scale civil disorders,” he said in an interview with a local Fox chain. “If we want this to happen again, an extreme presence of troops or police officers is needed, which will shake the population. This will not solve the problem.”

A first place from the 1992 disturbances

The decision of an American president to deploy the National Guard, far from being trivial in the United States, has been the first since 1992. On May 1, 1992, George Hw Bush had invoked the insurrection law to deploy the troops against a city in Los Angeles who had lit after the acquisition of four white police officers, accused of having spent a black motorist, Rodney King.

The riots had lasted six days and remained in history for their magnitude: more than 50 dead, more than 2,300 injured and more than 11,000 arrests.

As CNN recalls, the National Guard is the oldest force of the United States Army and has about 325,000 soldiers of each of the 50 states, three territories and the district of Columbia. He plays a unique military role in the United States, namely, serving both the federal state and the states. According to its site, the National Guard is “listening to the governor and ready to defend the country at any time and anywhere.”

But in this case, the decision to deploy it returned to Donald Trump, federalizing the troops. In 2020, Donald Trump had already requested the deployment of the National Guard in California due to civil problems, after the violent disturbances caused by the death of George Floyd, but requesting the governors. Several had also refused to send troops.

According to the Trump administration, the 2,000 members of the National Guard will arrive in California within the next 24 hours.
