“A threat to public health, peace and well -being”: several Iranian cities prohibit dogs to walk

At least 17 Iranian cities have banned in the last days of walking dogs in public places. The authorities evoke reasons for hygiene, security and public order.

Walking your dog down the street is now prohibited in Iran in almost twenty cities for reasons of hygiene, security and public order, local media reported Sunday.

Some Muslim religious consider impurely to caress a dog or be in contact with their saliva.

At least 17 interested cities

However, no law prohibits in Iran, a Muslim majority country, which has a dog and many Iranians own domestic animals. However, some political and religious leaders see it as a sign of a certain opulence and punish a symbol of western influence.

At least 17 cities, such as Ispahan (center), Yazd (center), Kerman (south) and Ilam (west) have banned in recent days to walk through dogs in public places.

“Judicial prosecution will be involved against criminals,” wrote the Daily Reforming Daily on Sunday, citing an official in the city of Ilam.

In Tehran, there has been a similar directive of the Police since 2019, but the prohibition of fact does not apply. In the Iranian capital, many owners thus walk in the streets and parks of the exclusive districts, which also have a certain number of stores dedicated to pets.

“Addressing his dog is a threat to public health, peace and well -being,” said the city of the city of Hamedan (West), Abbas Najafi, cited on Saturday by the Iran newspaper, publication of the government.

A “destructive social problem”

In 2021, 75 deputies had signed a text to condemn the possession of domestic animals, then described as “destructive social problem” for Iranian society.

In 2017, the Iranian Supreme Guide, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, had estimated that “having dogs for reasons other than care, hunting and protection is considered representable.”

“If this practice resembles that of non -Muslims, it promotes their culture or cause of neighborhood damage and disorders, it is considered prohibited,” he added, then cited by the Tasnim agency.

In 2016, the city of Shahin Shahr, in southern Iran, had aroused the stir for his decision to confiscate domestic animals to fight against “vulgar western culture.”
