Qatar World Cup 2022: Al-Qaeda calls for a boycott of the competition

On the eve of the start of the competition, the Yemeni branch of Al-Qaeda is urging a boycott of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

The terrorist organization Al-Qaeda calls for a boycott of the 2022 World Cup hosted in Qatar. In a statement reported by a monitoring group, al-Qaeda’s regional branch in Yemen accuses the Gulf countries of “working in the pay of crusaders to alienate Muslims on the peninsula from their Muslim faith.”

“We urge our Muslim brothers not to follow or attend this event,” they wrote in the statement, reported by the SITE intelligence group on Saturday.

“A pornographic campaign”

However, the terrorist organization does not make threats of attacks against the competition and does not promote violence related to it, according to the Reuters news agency.

Al-Qaeda accuses Qatar of carrying out a “pornographic campaign against the Mohammed Peninsula”, and accuses it of having “brought to the Arabian Peninsula immoral people, homosexuals, sowers of corruption and atheism”. According to the Yemeni branch of the terrorist organization, the event served to divert attention from “the occupation of Muslim countries.”

In recent days, World Cup organizers have responded to criticism of Qatar’s human rights record, saying that everyone, regardless of sexual orientation or background, is welcome during the sporting competition.
