“No strictly military response can produce requested effects,” said the French president at the beginning of this new National Defense and Security Council in Elysée.
It is the third organized since the beginning of the military operation launched on June 13 by Israel invoking the threat of an Iran that would have the atomic bomb. “The resumption of diplomatic and technical discussions is the only way to obtain the objective that we are all looking for Iran cannot acquire nuclear weapons, but also that there is no unexpected climbing in the region,” he added.
Emmanuel Macron’s statement occurs a few hours after the United States claimed to have “devastated” Tehran’s nuclear program by bombarding its three main sites this Sunday morning, joining the offensive launched by Israel.
A “serious moment for peace”
In his initial speech, Emmanuel Macron spoke of a “serious moment for peace and stability in the nearby and the Middle East, with very clear impacts also for our collective security”, after US attacks that, according to him, open “a new phase that obviously imposes surveillance and a resolved action of our part.”
Previously, the French president had had telephone interviews with most of his counterparts in the region and in Europe. He called the Iranian president Masoud Peeshkian “in the decalciation, the exercise of the greatest moderation” to allow a return to the diplomatic form, “he said in X.
Paris, Berlin and London urging Iran not to react
In a joint statement with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, he also urged Iran to “not undertake other actions that probably destabilize the region” in response to US attacks.
“We call Iran to participate in negotiations that lead to an agreement that responds to all concerns related to its nuclear program. We are ready to contribute to this goal in coordination with all parties,” said the three European leaders in the frontline line in attempts to solve the question on the diplomatic path, until now in vain.
In his call with his Iranian counterpart, the head of state also reiterated his call to the immediate liberation of the French Cécile Kohler and Jacques Paris, arrested in Iran.
“The dialogue, a clear commitment to Iran to give up nuclear weapons, or the risk of the worst for the entire region. There is only this path that leads to everyone’s peace and security,” summarized the French president.
Macron also exchanged Sunday with the leaders of Saudi Arabia, Oman, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar. Through a message from his chief of diplomacy Jean-Noël Barrot in X, France said he was “worried” after US attacks, urging “the parties to moderation to avoid any escalation capable of leading to an extension of the conflict.”
Specify that “it has not participated in these attacks or in their planning,” France says “is convinced that sustainable regulations for this question go through a negotiated solution within the framework of the non -proliferation treaty.” The Defense Council should also observe the fate of the French who wish to leave Iran and Israel, to “accelerate” their departure, according to Emmanuel Macron.
