A preventive measure against a harsh winter. The Ukrainian government is about to start evacuating the largely war-affected regions of Kherson and Mykolaiv, reports the guardian and the New York Times.
Although the two regions, located in the south of the country, have recently been recaptured from the Russians by the Ukrainian armed forces, a large amount of infrastructure has been damaged, leaving some inhabitants destitute, sometimes without water current, electricity or means to warm against winter temperatures.
The Ukrainian authorities fear that they will have to face a new humanitarian crisis if the Ukrainians living in these areas cannot survive in these conditions, which explains this decision to evacuate quickly. They should be relocated to the center and west of the country, according to the authorities.
“A War of Electricity”
In recent weeks, the Russian forces appear to have refocused their strategy around destroying key infrastructure in terms of access to power and electricity for Ukrainians. Several nuclear power plants have already been closed by the Russian army since the start of the war, recalled this Sunday on BFMTV Sébastien Boussois, a specialist in international relations.
“It is part of the battle on the Russian side to try to cut off the Ukrainians’ sources of light and power supply as winter approaches,” he said.
On Sunday, strikes hit the Zaporijjia sector, leaving sensitive areas of the nuclear power plant unscathed. Since then, Moscow and Kyiv have passed the buck as to responsibility for these attacks.
“We are in an electrical war: everything that weakens the Ukrainian network is in favor of the Russians,” General Pellistrandi, a BFMTV defense consultant, summed up on Sunday.
