Texas: at least 13 dead in floods, including children

At least 13 people, including children, died in floods in southern Texas, local authorities said on Friday. About twenty children are missing, who participated in a summer camp.

The sudden floods caused by thunderstorms and torrential rains left at least 13 dead this Friday, July 4, along the Guadalupe River in southern Texas, according to a first evaluation of local authorities.

Some 750 children participated in a summer camp in Kerr County, in the center of Texas. “We are without news about twenty years,” he also said, at a press conference.

“We are trying to identify the” deceased, he said, evoking very devastating and murderous “floods” devastated the area due to heavy rains.

Rob Kelly highlighted the sudden nature of these floods in this region, however, accustomed to this type of phenomena.

A very fast water rose

“We have floods all the time. It is the most dangerous river valley in the United States,” he said, in reference to the Guadalupe River that crosses the area, but “we had no reason to believe that it was going to be something like what happened here.”

According to the American and Atmospheric Ocean Observation Agency (NOAA), the Guadalupe River level increased during the night, from 2 meters to more than 9 meters, after precipitation.

Meteorological services have issued a flood alert for the Centro-South Center, asking the inhabitants to avoid any trip and those who reside near the Guadalupe River to go to “higher areas.”

In mid -June, at least ten people had perished due to floods in San Antonio, in southern Texas, following torrential rains.
