Two of the highest Christian dignitaries in Jerusalem went to Gaza on Friday, the day after an Israeli strike that affected the only Catholic Church in the Palestinian territory and left three people, said the Latin patriarchy of Jerusalem.
The Latin Patriarch Catholic of Jerusalem, Pierbattista Pizzaballa, and his Greek orthodox counterpart, Théophilos III, are at the head of an “ecclesiastical delegation” to meet the Christians of Gaza after the strike against the church of Sainte-Famille in the city of Gaza, added the patriarchy in a statement.
A strike denounced in France
Jean-Noël Barrot, Minister of Foreign Affairs, had denounced an “unacceptable” bombing of a low “historical protection of France”. “I told the Latin patriarch of Jerusalem the emotion and solidarity of our country. These attacks are intolerable, it is time for carnage cease,” he added.
France protects from Catholic religious communities in Israel and Palestine. This role is the heritage of a long history that dates back to the capitulations signed by François 1st with Sultan Solimen the Magnificent in 1535, “said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a written response to a matter of a senator in 2014.
