Pope Léón XIV called the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem on Friday, the Patbattist Cardinal Pizzaballa, currently visiting the Gaza Strip, to “ask about the situation” in the enclave and “the state of Father Romanelli and other people injured during the unjustifiable attack against the parish of the sacred family,” the Vatican announced.
The previous day, the only Palestinian Catholic Church, located in northern Gaza, had been attacked by an Israeli strike. At least three people died and nine were injured in this attack.
“Stop the unnecessary massacre of innocent”
The Pope had appealed to high the immediate fire after knowing the news of this attack. Today he reiterated “his support and affection throughout the community met around the parish.”
Leon XIV states that “doing everything possible to stop the unnecessary massacre of innocent.”
Later in the morning, the Pope also contacted the provincial of the Institute of the Incarnate Word, Father Carlos Ferrero. “With the patriarch, the Pope turned his thoughts into all innocent victims, those of the attack yesterday and all of this moment of pain in the Holy Land and throughout the Middle East,” continues the statement of the state of the Vatican.
The Israeli army, meanwhile, said that he had not intentionally attacked the place of worship and expressed “his deep pain” for civil damage and victims.
