Thai interim prime minister Phumtham Wechayachai will meet with Malaysia in Malaysia, his Cambodian counterpart Hun Manet in Malaysia in Malaysia, to resolve the crisis he degenerated in mortal confrontations on his border, the Thai Prime Minister’s office announced this Sunday, July 27.
The discussions, in Kuala Lumpur, are aimed at “restoring peace,” said spokesman Jirayu Houngsub, cited in a statement. This year, Malaysia occupies this year the rotary presidency of the Association of Nations of Southeast Asia (ASEAN), whose two neighboring countries are members.
On Saturday, July 26, Donald Trump tried mediation between the two countries. According to the US president, the two countries were ready to meet to reach a high fire. But on the early Sunday morning, the fight resumed, and each capital accused the other of losing his word.
The most fatal episode in fifteen years
For several days for several days, Thailand and Cambodia have been involved in the most fatal episode in almost fifteen years. The current episode killed 20 people on the Thai side, including seven soldiers, while Cambodia reported a balance of 13 dead, including five soldiers. According to Phnom Penh, more than 138,000 Thai people have evacuated risk areas, and more than 80,000 Cambodians on their side of the border.
The two countries dispute the design of their common border, defined during French Indochina. Before the current fights, the most violent episode linked to this dispute dates back to clashes around the Preah Vihear temple between 2008 and 2011, which had left at least 28 dead and tens of thousands of displaced.
The United Nations Court agreed in Cambodia twice, in 1962 and in 2013, on the property of the Preah Vihear temple, which appears as a world heritage for UNESCO, and a surrounding area.
