An organization supported by the UN says that the “worst famine scenario is underway in Gaza”

An IPC report, which monitors the magnitude of food insecurity worldwide with the help of several organizations, including the UN, alerted on Tuesday, July 29 on the situation in Gaza, which is described as “the worst scenario of the famine.”

The “worst scenario of the famine is underway in the Gaza Strip” due to the intensification of the struggle, the massive displacements of the populations and the restrictions in humanitarian aid, according to the IPC report (Integrated Food Safety Framework)) published on Tuesday, July 29.

The humanitarian crisis in the Palestinian territory devastated by almost 22 months of war “has reached an alarming and deadly turning point,” says this report, the fruit of the work of non -governmental organizations, regional institutions and specialized agencies of the UN.

Food airlines recently authorized by Israel “will not be enough to reverse humanitarian disaster,” warns the document, according to which these parachutes are more expensive, less efficient and more dangerous than the road route.

“The hunger thresholds have been reached”

Last May, the Consortium, which determined the level of food insecurity according to five levels, classified 1.95 million inhabitants of the Gaza strip (93% of the total) in a situation of “crisis” (level 3), including 925,000 at level 4 (emergency) and 244,000 in a disaster situation (level 5). A new encrypted analysis of the situation is underway, the report indicates.

This IPC alert is launched when the United Nations warned of any use of hunger as a weapon of war, and international pressure increases in Israel to end their total Gaza block imposed in March.

“The latest data indicates that the thresholds of the famine have been reached (…) in most of the Gaza Strip,” said the report, according to which “one in three people spends several days without eating anything.”

“More than 20,000 children were treated against acute malnutrition between April and mid -July, of which more than 3,000 suffered severe malnutrition. Hospitals have reported a rapid increase in deaths due to hunger in children under five years, with at least 16 deaths reported since July 17,” the document added.

“The immediate action and a large scale is necessary to end hostilities and allow humanitarian access without obstacles,” argues the consortium. “Not acting now will lead to massive deaths in a large part of the Gaza Strip,” he warned.

An Israeli offensive break

The Israeli army announced on Sunday a limited break in its offensive in the Gaza Strip, where international agencies have begun to distribute humanitarian aid for the first time in months. But Israel continued its offensive outside the hours and areas affected by this daily “tactical breakup” from 10 am to 8 pm (from 7 am to 5 pm GMT) in certain areas.

The war in the Gaza Strip was launched by the unprecedented attack against Israel by the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas on October 7, 2023. This attack had led to the Israeli side of 1,219 people, mostly civilians, according to a count of the AFP made of official data.

The Israeli offensive was launched in response in the Gaza Strip left at least 59,921 dead, mostly civilians, according to data from the Ministry of Health of the Palestinian territory, considered reliable by the UN.
