“Very relieved”: Florence Cassez reacts to the release of Israel Vallarta, its former complex, after 20 years in prison in Mexico

Israel Vallarta, his partner at the time of his arrest, was acquitted and released in Mexico, after almost twenty years in prison without trial.

The result of the story, two decades later. “I am very relieved by the release of Israel, which ends mine,” he reacted on Saturday, August 2 with the AFP Florence Cassez, the day after the acquittal of his former company Israel Vallarta, twenty years after his arrest in Mexico for kidnapping.

“The decision of the Mexican justice grows in this country that I like,” added Florence Cassez, arrested in 2005 and published in 2013 after having established that there had been procedural vices in this case, which had caused a serious diplomatic crisis between Mexico and Paris.

Israel Vallarta, his partner at the time of his arrest, was acquitted on Thursday night and released Friday in Mexico, after almost twenty years in prison without trial.

For the French, now 50 years old, “these next few days are now those of Israel, now it is up to him to express himself instead of me. He is free of his words.” Florence Cassez told AFP that he did not want to express himself in the media than through this statement.

She said she wishes her former partner, as well as her wife, “to enjoy the life that is now offered.” In his statement, Florence Cassez “thanks the president of Mexico for his support and the words he had for us, the victims of injustice.”

“We can’t forget”

During a press conference on Friday, Mexican president Claudia Scheinbaum described her arrest, broadcast live at that time, as “television.” “We cannot forget how the arrest was,” added the head of the State.

This issue, emblematic of the slowness of criminal procedures in Mexico, is one of those that the government of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018-2024) had presented a judicial reform that led to the unprecedented election of magistrates on June 1.

The French said that she was captured on a road south of Mexico City, then taken to the “Las Chinitas” ranch, where her arrest would have been simulated in front of various media.

When ordering the release of Florence Cassez in 2013, the Supreme Court of Mexico had determined that she and her partner had been arrested and then taken to a farm where “a staging of her arrest” had taken place, according to a summary of the sentence. At the time of the couple’s arrest, the authorities said three kidnapping victims had been released from this ranch: an 11 -year -old boy, a woman and a man.
