“It is not shame”: an Australian parliamentarian declared guilty of rape refuses to resign

Gareth Ward refused to give up the Parliament of the state of the south of Nueva Wales after being convicted of rape in two men. His lawyers also closed the vote of their expulsion from the Assembly.

Decognized in violation, refuses to leave his position as a parliamentarian. The Australian Gareth Ward, a member of the Southern Parliament of Southern Wales, campaigned from the cell of his prison to maintain his mandate as an independent deputy for Kiama.

The 44 -year -old politician was found in July of rape in two young people aged 18 and 24 between 2013 and 2015. He is currently being detained while waiting for his conviction to rule in September, said the BBC.

His expulsion for the aborted assembly

After the verdict about his guilt, Gareth Ward refused to resign. “I follow advice for the future, but I can confirm that I instructed my legal team to prepare a call as soon as possible,” he said in a statement published on August 1.

The South Wales Representatives Chamber had planned to expel him, but Gareth Ward’s lawyers replied, the Australian media were revealed as Australian Broadcasting Corporation News. At the last minute of Monday, August 4 to Tuesday, August 5, they obtained precautionary measures from the Supreme Court that blocked the motion of the Parliament destined to expel it, delaying the programmed vote for Wednesday.

Which increases the indignity of other parliamentarians and the rest of the Australian political class. Initially, this decision caused a constitutional conflict between the Judiciary and the Legislative Assembly, the latter considers that no jurisdiction can interfere in this case.

An emergency hearing before the Supreme Court requested

But also, Australian political parties protest the message sent by Gareth Ward and the conjure again and again to retire. “He is not ashamed,” said New Wales Labor Minister Chris Minns, on the 2GB local radio on Tuesday, August 5.

“It is an incomprehensible situation, having someone currently sitting in prison, declared guilty of serious sexual crimes, which requires the remaining deputy and continues to be paid,” he insisted.

“Every day, when Gareth Ward clings to his headquarters from his cell, the taxpayer pays the addition and the population of Kiama is speechless,” wrote the leader of the New South South Wales Mark Speakman Liberal Party in a press release.

The attitude of his colleague’s deputy is “offensive,” denounces. “It is decency, responsibility and basic respect for the community.” He assures that the party will work with the government for the expulsion of Gareth Ward “as soon as possible.”

The Government requested an emergency hearing before the Supreme Court. Chris Minns announced that it should probably take place on Friday, August 8.
